Loop size and tip angle are the first two variables you need to master, because everything downstream — momentum, delivery, catch location — is built on getting these right from the start of the swing. Both are adjustable, but both must become automatic through repetition so that in competition, you're focused on the target, not the rope.
Before loop size and tip angle mean anything, it helps to name the actual parts of the rope you're managing, starting from your hand:
Stand on the tip of your rope and stretch it up toward your head — slightly above it is fine. That height is generally the correct loop size for your body. This is a ground drill that trains the hand before you ever get on a horse.
Loop size is not fixed at the start of the swing — it can change once, early on, if you feed your rope. The coach is a strong believer in starting with a smaller loop and feeding it up to the correct size in the first or second revolution, rather than building a static loop at full size from the start. When you feed correctly, your loop starts slightly smaller and grows to the right size early in the swing — not gradually all the way to delivery. The critical thing is that the size at the moment of release is controlled, not accidental.
Beginning ropers focus on the size of the loop and ignore tip angle entirely. They build a large, beautiful loop — then drop it over the top of the steer from 8 feet in the air and miss. The loop's shape doesn't matter if the tip isn't pointed at the right spot.
Set up in front of the Smarty Pipes or any dummy in the exact body position you'd be on horseback. Practice swinging until your tip naturally floats 3–6 inches above the target's back during your last revolution before delivery. Count your swings and note where the tip is on each one. Muscle memory must do this automatically before you mount up.
One well-documented heeling approach teaches delivery around the bottom strand of the rope, not just tip angle — the bottom strand is what actually catches the feet, so its path and placement matter as much as where the tip sits. This approach also frames delivery around the steer's changing stride: as the header pulls the steer into the corner, its running stride compresses and the feet come together in a bounce — "hop, hop, rope" — and reading that rhythm is what tells the roper when the tip-and-bottom-strand combination should fire. Loop size and tip angle set up the shot; the delivery is timed to the steer's actual feet, not to a fixed count.
